A warm day called for a change of scenery... from a boat! The North River Lobster Company runs what is essentially a lobster shack on a barge during the summer months. It sails many times a day making a short voyage from 41st Street up river towards the George Washington Bridge to about 80th street, and back to the dock. This certainly was a change in perspective, as we see the Hudson River every day, we travel over it on the GWBridge, but we are never on the Hudson. We took an Uber with a carseat to the Pier and made our way towards the gangway. The next scheduled sailing was at 3PM, so we had 15 minutes or so to get situated, order some food, and settle in for a nice boat ride. J has been on boats, but smaller ones. Ski boats and pontoon boats. This was different. The food was... well we did not go for the food. We went for the atmosphere. There were buildings, there was New Jersey and New York, and the highlight - the George Washington Bridge. We even saw a sailboat with their sails snapping in the breeze. There was so much to look at that a selfie with J's face looking square in the camera was not going to happen... and then in the norm of all toddler's lives, attention diverted to something else- boredom started to settle in.
Right about that time was when we were coming back into the dock. I corralled the stroller, the big diaper bag and J and we walked down the 3 flights of stairs. We watched as the crew readied our arrival as we can back to the dock. For a few hours, we certainly took a detour. Next time, we will make it just in the nick of time for the sailing, and skip the food all together. And there was a voucher for a free bubbly (Yay!) on the receipt, so that will be redeemed in the future when the next excursion on this boat takes place. A few days later while we were driving over the George Washington Bridge, it was fun to talk to J about how we were on a boat looking at the bridge we just drove over. So these detours are great for putting me, the lover of routines and schedules, out of my comfort zone. The added benefit from it all are the conversations that we can have well after the trip. Until our next voyage, Namaste. M{OM}
